GE, Kingdom sign development MoU for energy projects

American conglomerate General Electric and the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding, forming a development partnership to enhance industrial infrastructure and research alternative energy use in the Kingdom. GE, one of the largest companies in the US, plans to work alongside MIME to promote energy initiatives involving advanced gas turbine technology and efficient smart grid technology, according to GE Vice Chairman John Rice. “As one of the dynamic countries in ASEAN today, Cambodia’s location between Vietnam and Thailand means it plays a strategic role in the rapidly growing cross-border trade,” he said. Cassava exports jump 94%

The Kingdom’s cassava exports soared 94 per cent year-on-year in the first nine months of 2011, despite the recent flood devastation the agriculture sector has experienced, according to Ministry of Commerce figures. The statistics showed that Cambodia’s export of dry and fresh cassava hit about 22,652 tonnes from January to September, compared to 11,656 tonnes in the same period last year. Plan for EU-ASEAN summit

Minister of Commerce Cham Prasidh on Wednesday, in a meeting with the European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia, called on delegates to host an EU-ASEAN business summit next year, according to Eurocham members who were present. The summit is expected to focus on enhancing business strategies to further develop ties between Cambodia and European countries, said Eurocham vice president and managing director of Sterling Project Management Thomas Sterling. “The whole point of the summit is to produce a strategic report to provide an outline for business in the country over the next 10 to 15 years, and hopefully attract further investment in the Kingdom.” While different import and export rules apply to Europe throughout ASEAN, Cambodia is fortunate to have the “Everything but Arms” quota, he said, which allows for duty-free imports from Least Developed Countries Continue reading

Calls for cables in the capital to be buried underground

Constructor group launched

Cambodia’s first constructors’ association was launched yesterday with the intention of increasing cooperation between construction companies in the Kingdom and their regional counterparts. The formation of the Cambodia Constructors’ Association sees the first collaboration between construction and design firms and enterprises registered with the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction in response to the sector’s growth, Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction Im Chhun Lim said at the association’s first congress yesterday. “It has been created to exchange experience and information on technical construction expertise between associations in other ASEAN countries and to develop the standards of the sector.” Once established the affiliation is expected to apply for membership to the ASEAN Constructor Federation, he said Continue reading
